The staff were generally friendly and helpful, and we were lucky enough to get a parking space at the rear. The location worked well for visiting friends nearby. Breakfast was freshly cooked and tasty, though on the last morning we waited more than 45 minutes because one staff member was taking orders and serving. On the first morning, it wasn't clear what our room rate included. A drink wasn't offered at first, then when we asked later we were told it had been included all along. We'd contacted the property twice before our two-night stay and got no reply either time. Our upgraded room had a cosy, appealing rustic pub style, but the details needed more attention. It wasn't particularly clean: under the bed looked as if it had never been vacuumed, and there were several cobwebs and plenty of dust. The bed was comfortable, but its old frame squeaked every time someone moved, waking us up and making sleep pretty poor.

Breakfast was generous, well cooked, and served quickly by friendly staff in a bright room full of light. The staff were attentive without hovering. We also enjoyed the lively feel of the hotel when we came back late, with live music and lots of happy people around. The soundproofing upstairs was great. We noticed the boiler at first, then stopped hearing it. Our room was lovely and very clean. The bed was fabulously comfortable, the bedding soft and fresh, and the shower, in-room bath, and loo were spotless. There was a proper tea tray with good biscuits. The room was beautiful, though the opaque glass around the loo right next to the bed was a little startling. It could feel too intimate for a new couple. The door wouldn't pull fully shut and fell slightly open, with a gap in the frame and a hole for pulling it open. That's my only real criticism. It was very warm, so we opened the windows, though others might like that. For £104, we were very happy with our overnight stay. The hotel feels thoughtfully put together and lived in, even though it's clearly been designed. I like a place with character, and wouldn't expect every bit of an older converted building to have fresh paint. My test is whether I'd want to hang out in the room and read, and I would.

Eddy made us feel welcome and was a wonderful host. The atmosphere and décor were beautiful, and everything was presented so well. The food was tasty and beautifully served, with good value for money. I'd definitely recommend it if you're in Bedford.

The menu has plenty of variety, from traditional favourites to world fusion dishes. The chorizo Scotch egg was a clear favourite. Flo and the kitchen team deserve a special mention for making our evening. We had a fantastic time celebrating a family birthday. The welcome, service, atmosphere, and food were all outstanding. We'll be back soon!

The room was small for taking photos, so next time I'd like to book a bigger one. We still took lots of nice pictures. We had a wonderful Christmas holiday at D prays hotel, with a good price, a bathtub, breakfast, and nice decoration.
