North Devon was a perfect base for exploring. There's a bike hire shop and access to the Tarka trail just a two-minute walk from the hotel, with miles and miles of off-road cycling. We were lucky with lovely sunshine in early spring and had a wonderful ride to Instow and beyond. The beaches and golf course at Westward Ho! are around the corner. We stayed at the Royal hotel at the end of February and had a treat of a visit. The staff were all fantastic and clearly wanted to make our stay memorable. The place was so clean and gave the impression that the staff and management really cared. Dinner on the first night had a lovely bistro feel, with great food and wine. Breakfast was a full 10 out of 10, and the Eggs Royale was the best yet. Thanks to the whole team for a great few days. Looking forward to coming back next time I'm in North Devon.

Dinner was a hit. I went for the Caesar salad, and the chicken was excellent. It's a simple dish that can go either way, but the croutons were light and well seasoned too. Breakfast was cooked to order; I chose scrambled eggs, avocado, and smoked salmon and enjoyed it. I arrived around 7pm, with the car park across the street. At check-in I got a warm welcome, and they kindly arranged a restaurant booking for dinner and breakfast when I asked. My room was spacious, with lovely furnishings. The tea and coffee selection was great, especially the coffee bags for a good-quality morning drink. A bottle of water in the room would've been a nice addition. Would I stay again? Absolutely.

The Royal Hotel feels a world away from the big chains I usually stay in. The service was so personal, and I truly felt like a valued guest. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and I had the best hotel breakfast I've ever had, even after plenty of hotel breakfasts. The rooms were wonderful, and the Christmas tree was lovely too. Thank-you!

The waitress handled the problems brilliantly, staying professional and apologetic and making sure we were properly compensated. We really appreciated that. The Royal usually does much better, so I hope this was just a one-off. At Christmas lunch on Wednesday, 10th December, the meal missed the mark with a few mistakes. The treacle tart was the biggest disappointment. I don't know who put it together or thought it was ready for the menu, but tasting it first might have prevented so many returns. It seemed like everyone in the restaurant sent it back.

A lovely historic place in Bideford, beside the bridge on Tarringe and a six-minute walk from Laundy island boat. The service was excellent. I asked for a quiet room and got one, and my single-room booking was upgraded to a nice double. I'd definitely stay again.
