Hotel Du Vin Bistro Birmingham

We spent two nights here for our wedding anniversary. The location was great, just a short walk from New Street train station. We didn’t eat at the hotel, but the cocktails were good and there was a very good wine selection.

Antonia at reception made check-in easy and stress-free. She was warm, very friendly and helpful, and her professionalism really stood out. The room was clean, comfortable and well maintained, and the atmosphere around the hotel felt welcoming. I had a lovely stay and would happily come back and recommend the hotel.

The starters were nice, and they didn’t charge us for the wine, which was good. But we were told there was no roast beef just after we’d plated up our starters, and that’s what we’d planned to order. Some starters took more than 30 minutes to be replaced, then our very average turkey dinners took 40 minutes. Other people seemed to get their food while we waited. As soon as I told the server we were leaving, our meals appeared. The water was warm, the wine was nice, but we skipped dessert and were ready for bed. It felt like we’d been there for hours, because we had. They need to keep everything replenished. I don’t think I’d return or recommend it.

The bistro felt relaxed and nicely decorated, without being grand or pretentious. The Hotel du Vin is a characterful former red brick Victorian Eye hospital, in the Colmore Business district, one of the nicer looking parts of the city centre. We dropped in for Sunday lunch on 21st Dec after Christmas shopping, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The roast beef was superb, and my wife’s Cod was just as delicious. I had a cracking Bordeaux Premiere with mine. The waitress even let us take extra Xmas crackers for the kids. Merry Xmas!
