The pub was lively, but my room stayed quiet. It’s handy for the motorway and sits across from a really pretty weir. I was travelling alone with my dog, and the staff were so friendly and welcoming, they couldn’t do enough for me. They’re the real reason this stay stands out.

Breakfast was so good I’d happily come back for it. We had a comfortable room with two twin beds and good facilities. The pub has quirky decor, with lovely Yorkshire touches that felt like a nod to the area. Everyone on staff was warm and helpful, nothing seemed too much trouble.

Parking is a little limited at the pub, though there are plenty of spaces in the car park across the road, overlooking the river. The food was top notch, especially the 8oz Treacle Marinated Flat Iron Steak, which I’d fully recommend. The kids’ pizzas looked amazing too, but they were gone before I got to try one. Our young waiter was terrific, though I’m afraid I can’t remember his name. Please pass on my thanks for such great service. The atmosphere was lovely as well.

We didn’t stay overnight, so I’m rating the food. For my birthday, I had fish pie with greens, and we shared cheese and biscuits after skipping starters. I finished with chocolate mousse. Everything was delicious, warm, and nicely presented. The fire was on, making it cosy, and the staff even sang Happy Birthday. They were kind and attentive, and made both us and our dog feel very welcome. Honestly, better service than at some fancy restaurants we visit.

We picked this spot for a family lunch because it’s conveniently just off the A1 on the way to London. The place has an old-fashioned, quaint feel, with traditional pub food. My steak and ale pie was excellent, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Worth a visit!
