The only letdown was my cod with winter ratatouille in spicy tomato sauce. The fish was beautifully cooked and the sauce was very good, but the ratatouille was just six half pieces of courgette and three slices of pepper, which was disappointing. We came to The Crewe Arms in Hinton in the Hedges yesterday as a group of 13, and otherwise had a really lovely time. It has that warm, cosy village pub atmosphere, and the welcoming team handled a large crowd smoothly, even with Sunday roasts in full swing. We felt well looked after throughout and would happily come back.

I was at The Crewe on Christmas Day too, at a table of eight, and I’m local to the pub. That other review is pretty comical. It describes highs like tasty scallops and excellent toast, then tepid soup and potatoes that apparently weren’t crunchy enough. They had to walk to the bar for drinks, which was framed as an ordeal. A piece of butcher’s string was found and removed, everyone was fine, but the retelling went on about “panic” and “gross negligence,” with disappointment that a £20 goodwill gesture didn’t cover a near-death experience where nobody was harmed. The chef said it was unprecedented, but apparently only full personal liability would do. They spent £440, ate most of the food, didn’t go to hospital, and declared a lifelong boycott, calling the meal a gamble with their safety. To me, the bigger risk is eating with someone expecting Christmas to come with a refund. The Crewe is a fantastic pub. Don’t let a freeloader put you off.

The staff are super friendly and welcoming, and we’ve made this pub our local. It’s a proper pub in a beautiful village, with a log fire. We’ve eaten here a couple of times: the Sunday roast was lovely with very big portions, and the fish and chips is a winner, with lovely thin, crispy batter. Great for a meal or just a quick drink.

We booked festive lunch for six family members and two children. The room was nicely decorated for Christmas, with good quality Christmas Crackers, and there was a resident Labrador. The kitchen could cater for coeliacs.

Had a lovely lunch out with the missus. Sorry the photo of the scrummy chicken burger is rubbish. By the time I’d finished, the plate was so clean it hardly needed to go in the dishwasher. We’ll be visiting again.
