The second hotel we were moved to had a bathroom with black mould, a badly stained toilet that barely flushed, a cracked shower, and hardly any water pressure. There was a dirty towel on the bed, which reception took away, and although the heating was on, we were cold all night. Neither this room nor the one at the Beach Hotel had a working door lock, so every noise made us nervous and the door visibly shook. That came after a terrible start at the beach hotel in Brighton, where my two friends and I found a filthy room. There was rubbish and dust on the carpet, including a broken bag tag, something that looked like blood on the mirror, a broken lamp without a shade, and cloudy, dirty water. When a bed bug crawled onto my friend, we stripped the beds and found torn, dirty bedding, holes, a pube, and mattresses stained deep yellow-brown. We complained at reception. The first receptionist called the manager, who said he'd check whether the nearby sister hotel, The Preston Park Hotel, had space. After a long wait, we had to explain it all again to someone else, then wait some more for the manager. By then it was nearly midnight. He offered to drive us himself, but as three young women we weren't comfortable getting into his car, especially with learner plates and no taxi licence. He'd first said only two of us could be accommodated, despite having offered a room for three, leaving one elsewhere. We refused, and he then agreed to take all three. We called our own taxi. The manager followed us to the second hotel and gave us cash for the return trip the next day, which we appreciated, but he also followed us into the room and that made us uncomfortable. This whole experience was shocking. The cleanliness, upkeep, and safety were unacceptable, and I'd strongly advise people to think again before staying here.

It worked well for us because we were going to a concert at the Brighton centre, and the location and price were fantastic. The place is old and worn, so don't expect the ritz, but it was clean and we slept well. The key arrangements worried me. We had to leave our key whenever we went out, which is fine if it stays secure. On both nights, though, it was handed back to us without anyone asking questions, even when someone just knew our room number. We complained, but nothing changed, so be careful about leaving valuables in your room.

The staff were really nice and always ready to help, and breakfast was included. It was a simple hot and cold selection, but pleasant. The spot is handy for shops, restaurants, and the beach. For the price, it's alright, though that's about as far as I'd go. The room was so dated it felt like stepping into the 60s, and it didn't seem properly cleaned. The light was so dusty it looked furry, the furniture wobbled, the carpet was badly faded, and there was rust in the bathroom. Worst of all, I woke up with a bed bug crawling on my arm and got some very uncomfortable bites. I'd avoid the hotel for that reason, because bedbugs can follow you home.

Breakfast was included, with a nice spread put out by the friendly staff. We were in the basement, where the window that served as the fire exit was very draughty, so we had to keep the curtains shut. The hotel is right on the seafront, just a quick stroll along the beach.

Great location and a nice hotel, but our basement room was right below reception. There was no carpet on the floor up there, and all night, about every five minutes, we woke to footsteps and what sounded like furniture being moved.
