We paid for the Christmas package and stayed four nights over Christmas. The Angel is still a wonderful hotel, with excellent staff, food and service, and we usually enjoy our visits. This time the room we were given had a few problems, so I’ll be more careful choosing one next time. It was spacious and comfortable, but the wardrobe was tiny. My wife managed to fit most of her clothes in, while mine stayed in the suitcase. It sat in a large alcove where a decent built-in wardrobe could have gone. The toilet was so low it seemed made for a five-year-old, and getting down and back up was a struggle for an adult. Someone over six feet tall trying it could make a good Monty Python sketch. The room faced the bottle banks, so there were plenty of bottles being dumped over the festive period. Early one morning a garbage truck also stopped right below our window to collect its load. The package included dinner and breakfast.

Going back to the Angel fifty years after my first stay in 1976 was a lovely trip down memory lane. I was then a junior research assistant on a project at the newly opened West Suffolk Hospital, and cycled there every day. The hotel was just as charming as I remembered, with great facilities and service. I also revisited the hospital, this time without my bike, and sadly it hasn’t fared as well. It has structural decay and is fortunately due to be rebuilt. Congratulations to everyone at the Angel, and all the best for the next 50 years.

The hotel had a really good atmosphere, even with lots of people there on a Saturday night. My room was warm, well equipped and very comfortable. The parking and luggage help were exceptionally good, and reception and bar staff were helpful and friendly without being intrusive or over the top. We also had cocktails on a weekend night. It was quiet, the surroundings were very nice, and the service was friendly again.

The residents’ lounge was cosy, but I found the bar’s grey decor made it feel rather cold. I hadn’t been to The Angel since the refurbishment and was pleasantly surprised by the changes. Sunday dinner was a letdown. The choices were very limited, and the roast beef I ordered lacked flavour. It didn’t match the dinners I’d had at The Angel before.

The staff are what make a business, and everyone we spoke to at the Angel was fantastic. Our room was comfortable and looked out over the abbey gardens, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. It’s a fine hotel in a lovely town, and a cut above.
