Clayton Hotel Cambridge

The room itself was clean, the decor throughout was tasteful, and the staff were friendly and efficient. It’s very convenient for the train station, though a bit of a walk into the centre. After a long day, it was irritating to find no restaurants nearby. The super king bed was lovely, but the pillows and duvet were only king size, so they felt far too small. The duvet barely covered the top of the mattress. I’ve seen this issue mentioned in reviews going back at least two years, so it’s poor that it still hasn’t been dealt with. There were also no bathroom hooks for towels, no individual complimentary toiletries, cheap toilet roll and tissues, no coffee machine, and a low quality, limited tea selection. Room service had just five options, and there was no minibar, which I’d expect at a four star hotel. It was a pleasant enough stay in an okay location, but the place really misses the details.

We got a free upgrade from the lovely gentleman working Wednesday night. I was rushing to get into our rooms after travelling since morning, so I didn’t catch his name. Everyone we dealt with was helpful, friendly and professional. The room had everything I needed. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was big and well lit for getting ready, and everything was clean. There was a complimentary minibar, good heating and plenty of hot water. It was quiet too, especially for somewhere so central.

We celebrated my daughter’s 9th birthday with afternoon tea, and the staff made it feel so special. They brought extra cakes and treats, a thoughtful birthday card, and even wrote “Happy Birthday” on her plate. Their kindness and attention made the day unforgettable. The warm, helpful service started with my first phone call to ask about afternoon tea. The lady I spoke with was knowledgeable and accommodating, which gave me confidence we’d picked the right place. Once we arrived, the whole team kept making us feel welcome and looked after. I’d highly recommend Clayton Hotel Cambridge for a celebration or special treat.

Breakfast was included, with a great choice of cooked and continental food. This time we also used the gym, which has a few bikes, cross trainers, a rowing machine and free weights, and is nicely air conditioned. As always, the room and ensuite were clean and well presented. The staff were welcoming, friendly and really helpful.
