That six-hour drive ended with one of the best dinners of our Campbeltown trip. We’d called only a few hours earlier, hoping there might be a table, and luckily they fitted us in. The food was full of flavour, made with fresh, quality ingredients, and the portions were generous. The presentation was lovely too, and the prices felt very fair for what we got. We were impressed by the drinks list as well. The restaurant itself is modern and attractive, but still feels welcoming. There’s room to spread out, while the atmosphere stays lively without getting too noisy. Service was warm and attentive, and we never felt hurried. We enjoyed it enough that we’re already thinking about coming back for a proper weekend at the hotel, not just another meal.

There were six of us, and we turned up in August without booking. The staff kindly found us a table and took our dinner order before several larger reserved groups arrived. Service was excellent, and everyone in our party was happy with the food and drinks. This is only a restaurant review, as we didn’t stay in the rooms.

Lunch came to £48 for two battered Haddock with peas and chips, plus two glasses of Pinot. The young waitress in training was very polite. It’s expensive, though I suppose that’s hotel prices. I thought I’d try the fish and chip shop next time, but unfortunately it was shut, apparently because it was the end of the season.

We stopped by the bar and had a really good time. It’s fresh-looking and attractive, with hundreds of single malts to choose from. The service was friendly, and it’s a great chance to sample a range of fine whiskies.

Storm Floris disrupted our camping trip, and finding somewhere at short notice that would take our dog was proving hard. The proprietor of the Ardshiel went out of her way to help us, and we had a relaxed, lovely stay. The welcome was so warm that we felt like part of the family. I think they fell in love with our young labrador, Ziggy. I enjoy whisky, and the hotel has a world-renowned whisky bar with so much choice. I’d thoroughly recommend visiting just for that. This stop was unexpected and unplanned, and if we could have afforded it, I think we’d have stayed much longer.
