Crown Wetheral

We’ve stayed here many times and always ask for our favourite room. It never disappoints. The place is exceptionally clean, and the staff are accommodating when we need extras. One thing that could be better is having someone regularly available at reception to answer calls, since we sometimes ring several times without getting through. A special thanks to Marlon, Maisie and Demi, who always make us feel welcome.

The bar staff were friendly and efficient, and drink prices were reasonable for a hotel. One meal we paid for separately was very nice, though service was slow. That was a bright spot in a stay that fell far short of what I’d expect from a hotel listed as four star. Our rooms weren’t well maintained or spacious, and the old furnishings were chipped and in poor condition. The beds and bed linen were very old, the beds were small, and the bathroom was outdated and smelly. There were no robes or slippers. We also had to ask staff twice to unlock the safe, which was locked when we arrived, and reception service was poor. We were on a Great Rail trip with dinner included for three nights. The food was often cold, overcooked and bland. One option was a plain salmon fillet with white boiled rice and broccoli stems. The salmon was overcooked, rice cold and broccoli undercooked. Since we had to order the day before, that was unacceptable. Breakfast was buffet style, served on cold plates. It seemed to have been cooked early and left in the warming dishes. There was only sliced white or brown bread, no fresh orange juice, just a cheap substitute, and the machine coffee tasted like it used very cheap beans. Poor quality for a four star hotel.

We had a fantastic stay. The staff did everything they could to make it just right, and the rooms and food were great. The leisure facilities were fantastic too, and included in the stay. I’d happily come back, either to stay again or just for a meal.

A small issue came up during my stay on Thursday evening, and the reception team sorted it without any fuss. Charlotte was there, and I think Demi was too, though sorry if I’ve got that name wrong. They gave me such a lovely welcome, and their help made the stay really enjoyable. I’ll definitely return.
