The fires and the people made up for the limited ale choice. There were only a few familiar options from the local brewery, but the staff were friendly and the place felt warm and comfortable. I came twice with family, just for drinks, and really enjoyed the bar. It had a homely feel, a mix of different people, and never got too noisy. With the log burners kept stocked, it seemed especially nice for a winter day.

The staff were very friendly and attentive, which was the one bright spot in a disappointing Sunday birthday meal. Three adults in our party each paid £21.95 for a roast, and the portions and quality were nowhere near what I expected for that price. The gravy was thin and scarce, the vegetables barely amounted to anything, and the three roast potatoes and broccoli were undercooked. There was only a teaspoon-sized amount of carrot and swede mash, plus a little cabbage. The big Yorkshire pudding had no real flavour, and the wafer-thin meat was especially poor: the beef was sinewy and tasteless. We hadn't eaten here before and didn't stay for dessert, since £11 for a slice of cheesecake seemed extortionate.

I travel on my own and feel welcome here. I can sit and do puzzles amid the cosy background bustle, with several fires burning. The food is totally delicious, the staff are lovely, and the pub is really well run. It's my favourite in Cheddar, and I visit several times whenever I'm in town. Such a great find.

The breakfast was lovely and nicely presented, and there was a great choice of drinks at the bar. My friend and I stayed the night while visiting the area, and everyone was refreshingly friendly and helpful. When I called the day before about something, the staff member helped me and left a note so the next day's team would know about it. They also made us feel welcome and offered useful local recommendations. I rarely remember to write reviews, but wanted to praise the business. I hope the hotel manager knows how good the team is. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in the area.

Dinner was tasty, and the service was friendly. I was a little sorry to see the menu had changed, though we'd happily come back to this charming place. It's calm and cosy, with a warm, inviting feel, and the wood-burning fireplace adds to it. Our 7-year-old son was especially delighted by the decorative spinning wheel, since it actually worked.
