The Rose & Crown Free House

The staff were friendly and helpful, and kindly gave us a takeaway breakfast because we had told them we were leaving early. The rooms were nice too, but getting out before the pub opened was awkward. The fire exit led to the smoking area at the back, so we had to leave by the side. The gate was open despite having a combination lock, and a large wheelie bin plus two regular bins were blocking the way out. There were a few room issues as well. The TV remote batteries were dead, and although we were told the TV would switch itself off after four hours, the guide kept coming up. I had to turn it off at the plug behind the TV. The wardrobe was too high for me to reach, and the bathroom towel rail stayed on constantly, making the room very hot. I couldn't fault the staff for being kind and helpful.

The room looked great and felt very secure, while the bar and restaurant had friendly, attentive service and great food. But the bed wasn't fit for purpose, and the broken window made it hard to get a comfortable, restful temperature in the room.

We had afternoon tea for Mother's Day. The filter coffee was good, and we particularly liked the tuna and salmon with soft cheese sandwiches. It just didn't feel as good as the afternoon tea we had here maybe five years ago.
