The hotel felt worn and poorly looked after, with bits of sticky tape holding down the carpet and a room door that didn’t lock securely. I booked three nights for work through my company portal, with breakfast specifically included, but was told a booking error meant I’d have to pay another £15. Even then, breakfast wasn’t served until after 9, too late for people heading to work. A bad experience all round.

I called because I was worried about a friend who’d stayed there the night before. I’d dropped her off myself while she’d been drinking, to make sure she got safely to her room, and we hadn’t heard from her the next day. I understand data privacy laws and work in that field. I wasn’t asking for confidential details; I already had her information. I only wanted the hotel to check she was okay or pass on a message asking her to contact us. The receptionist kept interrupting and shouting “data privacy!” before hanging up on me. It was shocking and completely unnecessary. A calm explanation, or even a simple offer to pass on a message, would have been enough. Hotels should show basic decency and care when someone raises a genuine concern about a guest. I hope the hotel seriously reviews how front desk staff handle situations like this.

There’s an on-site brewery, so you can get proper cask ales. A good place to stay.

The adjoining restaurant serves amazing food, and the staff are all lovely and welcoming. I also love the lounge furniture and all the old curios. The restaurant walls are covered with black-and-white photos of old actors and actresses, which turns naming them into a bit of a quiz!
