John M deserves a personal thank you. After hearing why I was in town, he made a real effort to help me feel comfortable. I wasn't very sociable after a difficult day, so he kindly brought my food up and took time to chat. The staff were all pleasant. I was visiting for a funeral and chose the Holiday Inn for its location near The Crichton. The building is beautiful, set in peaceful grounds. My room was spotless and nicely presented, with a woollen throw that made it feel extra cosy. The bathroom had an unusual but homely design, and the shower was excellent. The huge bed was incredibly comfortable. I come to Dumfries from London several times a year and would happily stay here again. It may be my new favourite hotel in the area.

We only had one night, so we decided to eat at the hotel. The food was delicious, really tasty, and a standout part of a great stay. The room was comfortable and fantastic, and we got a very warm welcome as soon as we arrived. Would definitely recommend it.

The peaceful setting in the old Crighton grounds comes with plenty of parking, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Most of the hotel is a newer building joined to the bar and restaurant, which are in the old sandstone building. Reception has a lovely smell, and the rooms are clean and spacious. Some of the furniture could be more up to date, and the TV is small by modern standards, though still perfectly usable.

We had a lovely stay, though the food was a letdown. The online menu listed several vegan dishes, so we expected them to be well catered for. In person, there was only one choice, and I didn't want it, so I ended up with a bit of a mishmash. The waitress was lovely, but if we'd known the options were so limited, we'd have eaten elsewhere. I'd expect the online menu to be accurate. Breakfast choices were limited too, although the staff were very helpful.

John in the restaurant is worth his weight in gold. Nothing was too much trouble, and he made us feel so welcome. Savio, I think, was the other waiter and barman, and his upbeat manner was a pleasure. The food was delicious both nights, and breakfast had plenty to choose from. We first stayed when it was The Aston hotel and loved the building, its history, and the grounds. After ten years away, we were a little unsure about returning now it is a Holiday Inn, but check-in was quick and easy, and booking dinner was no problem. The rooms are much as we remembered, still comfortable and equipped with what you need. After some health issues, it was a lovely, relaxing weekend. We'd certainly come back.
