We liked the semi-buffet breakfast, with cheese, meats and muesli, then the excellent kipper and black pudding from the menu. Weekends can get busy at breakfast with wedding and party groups. We stayed for a couple of nights over the summer holidays, and when we needed to come back to Durham, this was where we wanted to stay again. The old brick building has historic charm and has been renovated beautifully. The Marco Pierre White restaurant feels decadent, and the bar’s a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the decor and stained glass. The rooms have everything you need, and the lower floors stay toasty with the reverse heating. Service is attentive and accommodating without being overbearing, so you still have privacy. The staircases and domed roof are magnificent. I’d recommend it if you want time to appreciate the architecture.

I had a great night’s sleep, and the bedrooms and bathrooms had everything I needed. This was a fantastic find. The former council building has modern comforts, while the hall decor gives it loads of character. It was my first stay at a hotel indigo, and I’ll definitely use them more.

Hotel Indigo is a real gem in Durham, just a five-minute walk to town. The staff service was impeccable, and the bedding and bathroom were very clean. The shampoo, hand soap and lotion were high quality, and the disposable slippers surprised us with how soft, comfortable and durable they were. The building has historic beauty, with its ancient red bricks. My only issue was that the reception area shares space with the cafe, which made the hotel feel less classy. I’d highly recommend it.

I stayed here last year. I paid the hotel’s parking fee each day, but Smartparking, the company managing the lot, still charged me parking fees unfairly. I contacted the hotel by email and they ignored me completely. The room was dusty and gave me a sore throat. If you’re staying a long time, you might need throat medicine. At night, shining a light in the room showed an unusual amount of dust floating around. The building itself is old and generally cold, with draughts coming through the windows, so bring warm clothes. The heating often gets turned off without you noticing.

The staff were very polite, professional and helpful, and the bar and restaurant were good. I stayed two nights in October after pre-booking, a very good choice for sightseeing in Durham, close to Cathederal and Castle. The building is grand, and I believe it used to be the old council offices. My room was smart and well decorated, with tea and coffee making facilities, a TV, AC, a mini fridge and a walk-in shower. I’d highly recommend it and would return.
