Sleep was peaceful, and we could use the welcoming, well-kept bedrooms, bathrooms and shared areas without being disturbed. The main room problem was a window that wouldn't close, leaving it chilly and letting in unpleasant smells. One morning the hallways smelled strongly of weed, probably from the room next to ours, and it came into our room overnight. That made things uncomfortable, especially in a no-smoking building. Reception hours were limited, but we didn't need any help during our stay. Just something to keep in mind if you might need assistance. Towels can be rented, though cash only, which was a little inconvenient. We still had an enjoyable stay at Argyle backpackers and thought it was very good value.

It was nice meeting the other characters staying there. The hostel is central enough, with a bus stop around the corner or about a 15-minute walk through the park. Staff were nice, and the bathrooms and kitchens were clean. The room was nice, I guess, though the beds felt stiff and a bit uncomfortable. At the low price we paid, luxury wasn't really to be expected.

The kitchens are stocked with pretty much everything, full stovetops, air fryers, microwaves, the whole lot, and everything's clean as hell. The beds are uncomfortable as, but I loved the place and had great conversations with everyone. Such a pretty location. I miss you, Caledonia, I'm coming back for you!!!

The biggest hassle was having no hot water on the top floor, so we had to head downstairs for showers. Water pressure wasn't very good either, though acceptable for what we paid. We were two people in a small room on the top floor, and the bed wasn't comfortable. Everything was clean, including the bathrooms. The location was okay.

Wi-Fi was the weak point. Download was around 0.06 MB/s and upload 0.08 MB/s in an average case; at night it got so bad that it disconnected by itself. The location is 1.2 miles from Princess Street, and the walk into the city centre through The Meadows Park is pleasant. For Hogmanay, this was the cheapest accommodation we found. It had the basics for backpackers: a kitchen, laundry, a gathering hall with books and board games, a piano and a backyard. Receptionists were friendly and polite. Padlocks were available at reception for £5.
