I booked a Double Room, then spotted that a Triple Room was available and booked it as an upgrade. I cancelled the first booking within minutes, but ended up being charged in full for both rooms for the same stay. On the phone, hotel staff said they would approve a refund if Booking.com asked. They later told the platform the opposite and refused it. I have a recording of the staff saying they would refund me. The hotel got a higher value booking and suffered no loss, yet kept both payments over what was a 60-second mistake. They’re hiding behind the non-refundable policy in a way that feels dishonest. Rules should prevent losses, not enable this sort of thing. If fair treatment matters to you, stay elsewhere. Plenty of hotels won’t try to keep £300 from you. I’d avoid this place because of the management.

The street noise was the biggest downside. There was constant tram traffic on the main road, and a building site beside the hotel. Since the building is listed, the windows are single glazed, with no secondary glazing as I’d expected. Inside, our room was warm and spacious, and the staff were very helpful. The rest of the hotel felt a bit cool, so I wouldn’t want to spend long in the bar or dining room. Breakfast was very good. The location is central and convenient, and we had a view of the castle. We got the room at a sale price, so it was good value despite the noise.

There was building work above my room on the 5th floor, as well as construction next door. It started early and could be disruptive, though I had an early schedule and it didn’t bother me much. Other guests might not be so happy to wake to it. There are also a few steps up to reception, which could be difficult for people with mobility issues. The good parts were the clean, warm room and the friendly, helpful reception team. They also kept my luggage after checkout. The location is great, just a short walk from Waverley Station and the main attractions. I didn’t try breakfast because I wanted to eat at local restaurants, so I can’t comment on it. A comfortable stay overall, and I’d ask for a quieter floor if possible.

The location is excellent, and the room was lovely and very clean. The cleaners did a great job and were friendly. The shower worked well, though getting into the slippery bath meant taking a big step. Noise between rooms wasn’t a problem. The bed was so hard it made sleeping difficult. Breakfast was basic, with instant coffee from an urn, and started very late for us: 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends. That’s a real drawback when you’re a tourist heading out on tours, especially when there didn’t seem to be much cooking involved. Reception staff did their jobs, but weren’t friendly. The hotel is much older than its website suggests. They warn about access, but you still have to haul your suitcase up about 20 steps before reaching the lift. It was okay for the price, but choose it only if basic, serviceable accommodation is enough for you.

My sister and I came for four days to enjoy xmas, and had such a good time. We loved the hotel and will definitely return. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and both breakfast and dinner were excellent, with big portions. We also ordered room service a couple of times and it was good. Our room was lovely, overlooking the market with a view of the castle. The location is brilliant, right in the centre. It was just what we needed.
