I’ve thought about what happened for four years. I waited to write because we moved countries and had all the stress of an international move, then tried to move on. This happened in 2021, when we moved to Edinburgh and my partner’s company paid for us and our three cats to stay here while we looked for a place of our own. The location was great and things seemed fine until strangers came into our room while I was on a work call. The front desk had given them our room number and key so they could check in. It could have gone badly in several ways. The hotel just said “oops sorry,” and thankfully I wasn’t alone in the room. Later, after we found a flat, we started moving our things there. We’d made a big trip with most of our suitcases and the cats, were exhausted, and spent that night at the new place. When we returned for the rest of our belongings, our room was closed for cleaning, with a sign saying not to enter for 24 hours or something like that. I believe they were using an ozone cleaner. We hadn’t checked out, and still had paid time left in the room. At the desk, a staff member told my husband they thought we’d left. When we got a manager, we found out they’d thrown the belongings we’d left behind into a dumpster. They didn’t reimburse us and just told us we could check the bin. The company had paid for the hotel, so they couldn’t comp the stay for us, though no one offered that anyway. They gave us some worthless Marriott points, since we’ll probably never use Marriott again after this. Absolutely insane behaviour. You and your stuff won’t be safe here.

The staff were friendly, parking at the Q park next door was convenient, and lots of Edinburgh was within walking distance. It’s dog friendly too, with a reasonable charge of £10 per dog per night. I stayed for two nights and would come back next time.

The staff were honestly the kindest hotel staff I’ve met. Breakfast is complimentary, and the chef is the best 😄. There’s free coffee all day too, so that’s a 10/10 for me. The rooms are great, with gas heating and air conditioning.

We love coming here for Old Town, and Melvish and the rest of the staff were all so kind and helpful, 10 out of 10 for service. But I could only give three stars because I barely slept. The beds and mattresses were terrible when we visited three years ago, and still were this time. I understand they’re starting to refresh the rooms, so hopefully that includes the beds.

The room felt neglected and dated, from the worn walls and old furniture to the stale air. The bedding didn’t feel clean or comfortable, and the bathroom hadn’t been properly cleaned. Its doors were difficult to open and close and didn’t lock properly. The room door locks were worse: even after locking one, it would sometimes still open. That left me feeling very unsafe. The lift was meant to require a room key card, but anyone could use it without scanning one. I also found breakfast very limited, cheap-looking and unappealing, and the hotel seemed to add extra charges for almost everything. There was no help available to carry luggage. Management were dismissive when we raised concerns, and the manager was rude and extremely unprofessional. It seemed they had no interest in guests’ satisfaction or even basic hospitality, except for the two people working at the desk on Wednesday afternoon. From the safety issues and poor cleaning to the outdated room and indifferent response, the whole stay was negative. Guest safety clearly wasn’t taken seriously. I’d strongly recommend avoiding Hotel Edinburgh. There are much better options in the city where you can feel safe, respected and looked after.
