The Place Edinburgh

The Place Hotel really impressed us. Our room felt more like a suite, and we were very relaxed during our overnight stay in Edinburgh. The staff were welcoming, courteous, pleasant and helpful.

The location worked well for us: about a 10-minute walk from Waverley Train Station, though longer with a child walking, and less than a mile to the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. There are plenty of casual and fine dining places nearby. Service was outstanding from check-in, which was simple and clearly explained, through to help storing our stroller each day and our bags at checkout. Reception and breakfast staff were all kind, helpful and a pleasure to deal with. Breakfast cost £15.95 if paid ahead, or £19.95 on the day, and was phenomenal. There were individual flavoured yogurts, plain yogurt, granola, berry compote and other toppings, three cereals, muffins, fresh pastries, cut melon and strawberries, toast and various spreads, plus apple, cranberry and orange juice and water. I only noticed one milk option, though there may have been others if we’d asked. Hot breakfast choices were from a set menu; we tried them all and they were delicious. They accommodated our 3-year-old well with a clean, spacious cot beside our double bed. We’d brought a small pillow and blankets, but the hotel provided a large soft blanket. We ended up putting it over the top of the cot to help her sleep, as she’d never slept in one before. The bed was clean, roomy and comfortable, with reading lights and backlighting. The shower was small but clean and comfortable, and there were plenty of bath and hand towels. The room also had a stand-up fan that worked excellently, an iron and ironing board, an open wardrobe, and still and sparkling water, tea, coffee and a couple of cookies on a tray with glass cups and an electric kettle.

The room was quite small, with little proper space for a suitcase or hanging a coat, but it was very clean. Service was great, and the bed was one of the comfiest I’ve ever slept in, with top-notch pillows, sheets and mattress. I’d definitely stay again.

The Place was a great weekend stay, and I’d happily return. The staff were always kind and ready to help with anything I needed. It’s ideally placed for getting around Edinburgh’s main spots on foot, by tram or by bus, and there’s a Tesco Express just a few steps away. My room stayed comfortable and quiet both day and night.
