The Trengilly Wartha Inn

I had a happy time with friends and family, but I wouldn’t return for the atmosphere or the food. The menu was odd, and both the food quality and presentation were poor. There wasn’t much choice of ale, just an IPA and a stout, and I didn’t like the IPA. The website pictures make the food look very good, but it was mediocre in reality. When we arrived, the whole place looked derelict and closed. The entrance room smelled of manure, or something similarly unpleasant. Then the first table in the bar had a sign saying it was for locals only. That didn’t feel welcoming for our party of eight, especially when there were only two other guests in the pub.

We stayed overnight in the Garden View apartment, and it was utterly amazing, fully equipped with everything. The pub is cosy and feels wonderfully out of the way. The staff were friendly and amazing, and the food was lovely, made with local produce. Highly recommend.

Emily looked after us brilliantly from arrival to departure, a real asset to the business. The venue is quirky, charming and full of character. It’s a little off the beaten track, but well placed for walking sections of the South West Coast Path. Saturday night’s entertainment was great, and it’s clearly a popular spot. At £6.20, a pint felt rather expensive. The gardens could use a little TLC, but I’d revisit when I’m in the area.

We had a great afternoon meal and would stay over next time. I had the game pie with twice-fried chips, and my wife ordered the beer-battered cod with chips and peas. We made a yummy sound with every mouthful. I’d give it 11 out of 10 if I could. We’d come for lunch after a friend recommended Trengilly. The drive down the single-track road was hairy, especially when we met someone coming uphill. Glad we don’t have a big car. The atmosphere was lovely, and we got a warm welcome at the bar. It’s quite remote, which adds to the magic of the place.
