The conversations felt real, unhurried and human, from the barkeep and regulars to passing travellers. This place could win a small conversations award without even trying. The staff were exceptional, the amenities solid, and even the cleaning crew took pride in their work. The breakfast chef was close to a mad genius, making the morning meal a little celebration. The New Inn in Gloucester is a hotel, but it also feels like a vessel for old stories. At night there's fog, the courtyard goes quiet, and you can imagine a spirit or two still walking the creaky halls. It somehow feels familiar, as if I've been there in another life. My very ancestor's celebrated life here. Built in 1450 to shelter weary pilgrims, it feels like stepping through a crack in time. The beams sag, floorboards tilt and creak, and the rooms are spartan and honest, barely touched by modern reinvention. The medieval world lingers in the walls while everything else changes. The announcement of a Queen Lady Jane Grey the nine days Queen happened here. There are rumours of William Shakespeare's company, the lord Chamberlain's men, having it on their list too. From check-in to departure, people looked after me in a way that felt genuine rather than polished and corporate. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you travel, somewhere authentic, imperfect, alive and unforgettable. You leave wanting to come back. The wandering Bostonian approves.

Chef Phil, please keep cooking. I loved this chicken fried with veggies so much I'd join its fan club and be president. The chicken was golden and crisp, the vegetables full of flavour, and every mouthful felt like a cluckin' masterpiece, with what seemed like Phil's secret superpower behind it. This dish filled my heart as well as my stomach.

The location was excellent and my room was clean, but the service was nonexistent. I had a very heavy suitcase and no one offered to help me carry it up two flights of stairs. WiFi kept disconnecting, and the place was very noisy, with paper-thin walls.

We came back for lunch for a second time because the steak and ale pie with fresh veg had impressed us so much. The food was very good again. Last time they brought a small jug of gravy on the side, so I asked for one today. I was told, "the gravy is in the pie'. There was some in there, but not enough to go around. Would it really have been so hard or costly to bring me a little extra? Nearly five stars.

Friendly, helpful staff and a good-value breakfast. We were there to visit the great Christmas market, and the old coaching inn was brilliantly placed for Gloucester town and Docks. The room was clean and tidy, with a comfortable bed and clean en suite bathroom. The only drawback was an air conditioning unit outside our bedroom that hummed, though it wasn't on all night.
