The staff were genuinely welcoming. Jocelyn checked us in, and Alix seemed to be covering reception, the bar and waiting tables. We had a decent evening meal, and breakfast options were good too. I chose smoked salmon, black pudding and poached eggs. The chef served us, then brought butter, but there was no toast, and although juice glasses were set out, no juice was offered or available. The stay itself was a letdown. We used an Itison voucher and paid another £25 for a large double, room 8, which was awkward to find. It was warm, and at first glance seemed fine, but one of the chairs was broken and unusable, the bedside lamps didn’t match, and the mirror shown in the hotel photos was missing from the dressing table. There was no Wi-Fi in the room or mobile signal. The ensuite looked nice, with a large shower, but we couldn’t get hot water and gave up after running the tap for 10 minutes, so I had a cold shower. Breakfast was in another room from the bar and dining area, and it was freezing despite having three radiators, all cold. When we came down, nobody was at reception and the chef was the only person around, so there seemed to be no one available to help hotel guests with an issue. The place feels understaffed and dated, and needs updating. For the extra room charge, I didn’t expect a broken chair, mismatched lamps and no hot water. Friendly staff, but the accommodation fell short of other places offering similar Itison deals.

After a long drive, we stopped here for a meal, a rest and a drink before the last hour of our journey. It was lovely, with a cosy fire and a welcoming feel, especially for our girls. The portions were huge, the kids’ menu was great, and the staff were lovely. We couldn’t fault the place. Gorgeous little hotel tucked away in Golspie. We’ll be back!

My wife enjoyed her meal, but I was brought a burger and chips instead of the haddock and chips I’d ordered. The server, Iona, offered to have it changed, but I declined because it would have taken long enough that my wife would have finished eating by then. I didn’t eat any of it, and they still charged me the full £17. Since the mistake was theirs, that felt like poor customer service. We’d hoped to return to the area with her family, but we’ll avoid this place on the way up. Thanks for the £17 burger and chips. Stay well clear.

Our room and bathroom were clean and nice, and the staff were friendly and kind. The hotel is quite small. The food was good, though it was a shame they had no steak and ale pie on either of the two nights. We stayed here for the first stop on our road trip. I’d recommend it.

The meal was pretty good, though my fish portion was small and disappointing. We’d booked a table for lunch at about 1:45 in the afternoon. It felt crowded, so we checked with the server whether service would be prompt and were told there wouldn’t be a problem. Still, our food took more than 45 minutes to arrive. Time is money, and that felt like a waste. We didn’t stay at the hotel, but the lobby has clearly seen better days. It’s a shame, since there isn’t much else around and the dining room is quite nice. I’d eat in Inverness or bring lunch if travelling through.
