Gable End Hotel

We eventually found somewhere else to stay about a 10-minute walk away, but this place left us in a terrible situation. The next day I saw someone sitting in a car on the hotel drive and went over. They were dealing with exactly what I’d dealt with the day before. Avoid this place, and warn anyone thinking of visiting Great Yarmouth. We’d booked for a weekend and got arrival instructions that morning, so things seemed fine. After a three-hour drive, we rang the bell and knocked, but nobody answered. The phone number on the website and the one on the door got no response either. I kept trying for an hour, then contacted booking.com. After another 45 minutes, they said they couldn’t accommodate us, without explaining why. Pathetic service. This place shouldn’t be allowed to advertise online.

We hadn’t paid in advance because we’d agreed to pay in person, so at least we didn’t lose money. But I’ve heard another woman paid for ten nights and arrived to find the hotel abandoned. If the Gable End Hotel is closed, it shouldn’t be accepting bookings and payments. We booked over the phone a few weeks ago and had a good experience on earlier visits, with good service. Justin was friendly and said he’d look after us this time too. But after our six-hour drive today, no one answered the doorbell, phone or texts, and we had to find somewhere else. The hotel we’re staying at now says Gable End has been closed for two months. I don’t know the exact details, but apparently other guests have recently arrived with bookings and found it closed or abandoned as well. It’s a shame to write this because Justin had always been friendly and we’d enjoyed our past stays. I hope things can be sorted out. I’d hate for more people to travel all the way to Yarm, spend their money, and end up with nowhere to sleep.

We’ve been coming here once or twice a year since 2019, back when it had the previous owner. I’m genuinely sad to say I’m not sure we’ll risk another visit. Travelling six hours only to find an abandoned hotel isn’t worth that uncertainty. They’re still taking bookings despite apparently having been closed for two months. Justin seems to be having a hard time, and I think he could use someone to help with the ring doorbell. I hope he can turn things around. He’s been very friendly in the past.

There’s plenty of parking, and Jason was always happy to help us find our way if we wanted to explore. He was a great, friendly host when we arrived. Breakfast was hot and tasty, with lots of tea and coffee. For a budget hotel, it’s good.
