The bed was comfortable, and there were plenty of sockets in the bedroom, though no USB port. Bring a plug, or you can use the TV socket. The room was clean but a bit rough around the edges. Staff were pleasant, and it’s a handy spot about 15 minutes from Sunderland. Breakfast finishes at 8.45 sharp. It seems suited to contractors and people staying for work, but felt too early for a leisure trip. I saw someone come down at 8.40 and get hurried to order hot food before properly reading the menu or making a brew. The breakfast menu itself looked confusing, though it works for the hotel. There’s a choice of traditional English or Thai food. I had Thai the first night and it was a great choice, tasty and nicely presented. The steak and ale pie the next night was okay, nothing fancy, just average pub grub. The takeaway service seemed popular with locals, and the restaurant had plenty of people in it.

The restaurant is comfortable and nicely renovated. I’d forgotten the place was known for Thai food, so I ordered a burger instead. The beef patty wasn’t nice, and the chips didn’t taste like potatoes. My room was clean and basic. It’s a 12-minute drive into town, which didn’t suit me, though it may work for other travellers. Reception was absent most of the time. There’s a sign asking you to ring the bell, but when I rang it at 7:30am, nobody came. The hair dryer looked about 30 years old, but it still worked.

We didn’t try the food on this visit, but we certainly will next time. The staff were really friendly and gave us a warm welcome and goodbye. We had the executive double room, which was lovely and well equipped with all the amenities you’d expect, even fresh real milk. There was also a great view over the valley towards Penshaw Monument. Lovely hotel.

There’s a friendly little bar diner downstairs. The room was clean and a good size. I’ll use it again.

I’ve stayed here several times over the last few years and just spent seven nights here. The bedrooms are lovely and the beds very comfortable. Food in both the bar and restaurant is very good and reasonably priced. I’d highly recommend the hotel and hope we can come back in future. Thanks to all the friendly staff for making our holiday, especially Shirley, Sue, Donna, and Dave. Sylvia and Robert
