North Devon Resort

The NDR was very quiet when we visited in February, which made the stay really enjoyable. My two kids loved all the facilities, from the soft play and cinema room to the heated pool, restaurant and games room. We stayed in the three-bedroom residence with a hot tub and had no complaints. It was brand new and clean, with comfy beds, everything we needed and really stylish interiors. The views across the Severn estuary to the snow-capped mountains of Wales were beautiful. The restaurant was good, and there was loads indoors for kids, including a pool, soft play and games room. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the kids want to go again. I’d read the reviews and worried it would be bad. I can’t speak for the other accommodation, but the residence was good and I’d recommend it.

The bar, food and breakfast were all good, and parking here was easy. The staff I met were lovely, and the room had what I needed and looked nice, though it was just OK. The front door wouldn’t close properly, so you could feel the wind whenever it blew. Smoke from people downstairs going outside drifted into the room, and noise came through from downstairs and next door upstairs since it wasn’t soundproof. Some rooms have nice views.

I booked two apartments for my family of 10 during the summer holidays. The reception staff were welcoming and gave great customer service, and everything else was okay. But the extra bed we ordered was completely broken and unusable. We couldn’t find any staff at night, so had to deal with it ourselves. The rooms were in very poor condition and outdated. The shower swung between freezing cold and dangerously boiling when we tried to make it lukewarm, which felt especially hazardous with children. The pool incident is the main reason this became a two-star experience, which I almost never give. While my family and I were playing on one side of the pool, a chubby man in a black polo shirt with “pool manager” on the back came over and suddenly shouted that we were using too much of the pool. We were horrified to be yelled at like school students being told off by a teacher. He threatened to kick us out if we took up too much space. Other families were spread around too, so if capacity is a serious issue, I’d suggest investing in a bigger pool or setting a limit on how many people can use it at once. After that interaction, I won’t return. I’d ask the resort’s higher-ups to investigate.
