The breakfast was a real highlight, with plenty of help-yourself fried options and veggie sausages and an alternative to bacon cooked to order for me. There were pastries, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereal, juice, toast and a good range of teas, plus the usual tea and coffee. The dining area looked recently refurbished. Our standard room was roomy, warm and comfortable, with a bath and shower over it and lots of hot water for a proper soak. The hotel felt welcoming, and the staff were efficient, friendly and smiley. We had ample free parking, and it was about a 15-minute walk to the High Street shops, pubs, restaurants and cathedral. I’d heard there was work happening during our stay, but I didn’t notice it.

The large dog-friendly room had a very comfortable bed, and parking worked well for our campervan, with roomy spaces set well back from the road. The young people at reception gave brilliant service, and we really enjoyed staying here. It’s good value and somewhere we plan to return to. It’s a lovely old building, though the floors creak, sound carries, and the carpets are very tired. The dining room looks lovely, and hopefully it’ll be fully refurbished by the time we’re back.

For about £50 per person per night, this was amazing value, and there was vegan breakfast available too. The location is handy for Canterbury centre, making it a good choice for a short visit or weekend. The room was spacious, warm, clean and quiet, with lots of storage, a TV, hairdryer, kettle and tea and coffee sachets. The huge bed was really comfortable. The decor is worn and has a 1970s feel, but that has a bit of charm.

There was plenty of parking, and we walked into the city centre. The staff were lovely and pet friendly, and dogs could come into the bar. We enjoyed the steak pies, and there was a good selection at breakfast. We’d booked two “classic” rooms. Both were clean and well heated. One had its air-conditioning unit boxed off, which didn’t matter at this time of year. The bathroom was a bit dated, as you might expect from a “classic” room.

It was easy to park right outside, though you need to give them your number plate when you arrive. The hotel is close enough to walk into town while still being quiet, and there’s a Tesco Express a short walk away. We spent Christmas here and had a really pleasant stay. The side we were in had been updated after some redevelopment, and it felt comfortable, warm and welcoming. The beds were especially comfortable and we slept well. Staff were friendly throughout. A lovely place to stay while exploring Canterbury.
