We left after about 40 minutes, so the evening felt much more rushed than we’d hoped. Dessert arrived as soon as our plates were cleared, and our drinks had come only about half a minute before the food. We’d dressed up for our first visit and wanted time to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine, but the meal moved along quickly. The place itself is cosy and lovely, and the food was pleasant enough. We had roast potatoes, Savoy cabbage and carrots, with onions and peppers in a jus rather than gravy. We ate it all, though neither of us found it special. We weren’t given a menu or told what was coming, but eventually understood the earlier “are you lamb?” question as the clue to our meal. When we arrived, a man was pouring wine at an empty table, and we weren’t sure whether he worked there or was a guest. We hadn’t realised that Sunday to Wednesday means the same two courses for everyone, served at the same time. We’d have chosen Thursday to Saturday, when there’s a choice of food and, more importantly for us, a slower pace. The website doesn’t make the set-day arrangement clear; you have to dig around to find out. It was also hard to tell who was staff, as they were dressed very casually. At £30 each before drinks, we were disappointed, though I’m sure plenty of people rate the place.

We had a lovely few nights here, and held our wedding at the venue. The rooms and grounds were lovely, the food was delicious, and the whole team made the occasion feel special. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we stayed a little longer afterward, and we’ll definitely be back. If you’re thinking of staying, I’d recommend it. We couldn’t fault the place or the staff. Thanks to everyone, and see you soon.

Jonnie’s welcome made the whole world seem perfect. Diana and the chefs looked after everything we needed with such kindness and thoughtfulness. We had a beautiful couple of days for our wedding anniversary, with our faithful border terrier along too. The rooms and shared spaces felt tasteful, welcoming and friendly, and everyone we came across seemed comfortable and happy. We’ll be back!

We especially enjoyed spending part of the evening in the common room. There’s a bar for drinks, and it was a pleasant surprise to see travellers coming together there. The White House is a lovely, tucked-away country hotel, and breakfast was wonderful. I highly recommend it.

The peaceful, beautiful setting was a real plus, and we liked the downstairs areas and dining room. The room itself was spacious, but its furnishings weren’t thought through very well. There was no wardrobe or chest of drawers, so unpacking for three nights wasn’t really possible. A large modern armchair took up space and didn’t suit the room’s style. We also expected more service at these prices. Rooms aren’t serviced daily, though you can request it. We asked on the second day, but housekeeping barely seemed to happen: the full bin was left, there were no fresh tea bags or mugs after we’d taken the used ones downstairs, and the bath and basin weren’t cleaned. With so little service and hardly any contact with staff, we came away disappointed, despite the lovely place and excellent breakfast.
