Fox and Grapes

I had a great roast here around a year ago, but my visit for a drink was a different story. When I asked for a lager top, with the beer on top, the bar steward poured the lemonade first. Then, when I explained that you drink the beer through the lighter lemonade on top, he shouted, 'I know what a top is!' and berated me while pouring a very strong shandy.

The man behind the bar was really lovely, but the rest of the experience was a letdown. There was no parking, and we had to pass through the kitchen and staff areas. A woman working there sang loudly over people trying to eat and complained about the music not working. We were expected to sleep in a bed without covers or pillowcases, and the sink had clingfilm wrapped around it so it couldn't leak. This place needs a new manageress.

Fox and grapes looked after our large family group with real care during a difficult time. We'd booked ahead for a family wake, and the staff were so helpful, with amazing service. The taster bowls were delicious too. I'd definitely recommend visiting or booking an event there.

I've been coming here for over ten years, so it's sad to see the atmosphere the new managers (?) have created. During our visit, we heard older staff talking down to younger staff throughout the night. I also asked if our table for two could become one for five, making clear a drink would be fine if that wasn't possible. The waitress said there was no way, then loudly talked about me to another waitress right beside me. My boyfriend asked another waitress, who found us a separate table for two. Later we saw a couple who'd walked in without a booking get the empty table beside the group we'd arrived with. There used to be a lovely blonde woman with short hair who made every visit a joy, and this place used to be a weekly highlight. I hope this feedback leads to action. I know the job can be difficult, but that doesn't excuse what we experienced and saw.
