Manchester South Hotel, Sure Hotel by Best Western

We had a really good night's sleep, thanks to the very comfortable beds, and the location was handy, with a bus into the city centre stopping right outside. The rooms were clean but a bit worn, with peeling paint, loose fittings and a bathroom floor that lifted a few times. Breakfast was average, with limited choice, but it was fine. A special thanks to the receptionist who let us leave our huge kit bag in the conference room that morning before check-in. We'd probably stay again when visiting Manchester Metropolitan University.

The room was clean and tidy, with good bedding and a nice shower. But there are a lot of stairs: two staircases to reception, another one down to the bar and rooms, then two more to the top floor where I stayed. That makes it unsuitable for disabled guests. It's handy if you're travelling through, though I wouldn't call it a holiday destination.

The hotel has a curious mix of old and modern, and the people there were friendly. Some of the corridors looked a bit creepy, which adds to the charm, I suppose. We stayed one night with my mother, sister and niece, and it was decent for that. The room got very hot, with no way to ventilate it except opening the windows. I wasn't comfortable leaving them open while we slept. Parking costs extra, though that's expected in most places.

The room was nice, and we found the staff excellent. There are plenty of food options nearby, and a direct bus runs into the city, so the location is great. Sleep was another matter: the walls are thin and the floors creak so much that we could hear every footstep. I can't recommend it if a good night's sleep matters to you.
