Breakfast was fabulous, with plenty of good-quality ingredients, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a spacious, comfortable room, a lovely clean bathroom and a wonderfully comfortable bed. The High St location was noisy. We’d booked ahead for the Christmas Market, and there’s nearby parking; shops and other places are within walking distance.

My wife and I only stayed one night, and I’m glad we were actually out for the whole evening. The place felt unwelcoming, and the rooms were extremely basic. There was mould and dirt around the windows and doors in the toilets and showers. From the greeting to the state of the hotel, we decided to leave without breakfast. The options looked very basic, and the owner said it would cost £10 per person. I can’t upload the photos and videos I took, but I’ll try on Tripadvisor. If we’re in the area again, we won’t stay here. I’d rather pay more for a Premier Inn.

We had some noise, which makes sense for a very old building in the town centre, and we thought the price reflected that. If you need a silent night, there are plenty of other options. We loved the atmosphere, the good beer and food, and the chance to join in with the locals. Our family had two rooms for three nights, from 11th to 13th August inclusive. Both rooms were very clean, the beds were comfortable, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The bar felt welcoming too, and we sat in with the ukulele group while they practised. The food was very good, especially breakfast.

I didn’t stay overnight, but stopped for a few pints and dinner, and it was well worth it. The food was good quality and plentiful, the prices were amazing, and I liked the open fireplaces and characterful features. There’s a nice atmosphere, too. I’m travelling up and down the country for work, and this is one of the few places I’ve flagged to come back to. I don’t know why it isn’t heaving. None of that Greene King crap.

We needed somewhere at the last minute, and booking was easy. The central location worked well, with no trouble parking overnight. Our family of four fit comfortably in the family room with one double and two single beds. Being above the pub made it a little noisy, but we all slept fine.
