Danesfield House

The staff made our Christmas stay, looking after us with cheerful smiles and constant attention to detail. We spent three days there with family, and were always well fed and kept hydrated. Our rooms were comfortable and, in our case, spacious. Christmas decorations and trees were everywhere, and a fire was burning in the great Hall. On Christmas Eve, a small local choir led carols there, which set a lovely mood for the days ahead. There was lots of delicious food, plus snacks and champagne often laid out in the great Hall. The building and grounds were beautiful, and we managed a few sunny walks outside. A very enjoyable place for a special occasion.

Sitting by the open fire with soft Christmas music playing was probably my favourite part. Room 233 was lovely, and all the staff were friendly and attentive. The hotel has so much character, is beautifully stunning, and was spotlessly clean. We had three course dinners both evenings, and every dish deserves a mention, especially the lamb, duck, and halibut. Breakfast was cooked perfectly and came with equally good service. Everyone we dealt with during the stay was exceptional. The grounds are extremely well kept and great to explore. With its fabulous history, this is a lovely luxury break for couples. We’d return in a heartbeat.

The peaceful pool area and unhurried feel made the spa a relaxing place to spend time. Our room was comfortable and finished with taste, in a classic style that fits the property. Service stayed polite and professional, and staff were around when needed without hovering. There’s a real sense of space and calm here. The elevated grounds offer sweeping views over the Thames, with beautifully maintained gardens and a grand building that still feels welcoming. The public rooms are elegant and quiet, better suited to switching off than looking for entertainment. A solid countryside break if you want scenery, tranquillity, and understated luxury.

The gardens were well kept, and the restaurant staff were pleasant. The food was okay, though nothing special. Even the locals I met for dinner on our second night seemed surprised by Danesfield’s downfall. Such a shame. The pool was busy, and there was nowhere to sit around it. People had left towels to save places even when they weren’t swimming, like at a Spanish resort. The room was tiny, with a sloping shower ceiling that made it hard to stand. The furniture was chipped and worn, and the whole place looked tired inside and out. The exterior was dirty, and the interior badly worn. It needs a thorough update. There was no EV charging, which seems odd in 2026, and they didn’t accept American Express. I was very disappointed given the place’s local reputation.
