The room was basic but had a comfortable king bed. The light behind the bed flickered, there was no way to control the heating, and it was cold when we went to bed before getting too hot in the night. The shower was narrow, with a grubby-looking tray and a shelf too unstable for toiletries. We booked this as a spa break, but the spa wasn’t up to the job. We arrived at 1:30pm, before the 3pm check-in, and were told our room was ready. When we said we’d like to check in and use the spa, they said early check-in would cost £20 and that we couldn’t use the spa before checking in. We left and came back, then went to the spa at 4pm. We got towels, but robes cost an extra £10 each. There were only six loungers by the pool, the sauna and steam room each fit four people, and the tiny pool was so crowded we couldn’t even swim a length. The mixed changing rooms had one shower and one private room. The hotel has lots of rooms and also lets in non-residents, but the spa doesn’t seem equipped for more than 10 people at once. At Harry’s, the food was pretty standard, nothing special. I ordered a Percy Rose made with flat prosecco, but the staff were very good and replaced it when I mentioned it. Breakfast had a good buffet selection. We walked around the grounds in the morning, but there wasn’t much to see beyond a small pond with lacklustre fountains. It was a very disappointing stay. I wouldn’t recommend it or return.

The calm, welcoming atmosphere made it easy to settle in and enjoy the afternoon. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout. We had a lovely afternoon tea, with fresh, tasty sandwiches and cakes, and beautifully baked scones that went perfectly with jam and clotted cream. A really nice treat for a special afternoon, and we’ll be back!

The Burton Suite turned out to be just the right size and setting for my father’s 70th birthday. The other private rooms we saw were also beautifully decorated and well cared for. Georgina showed us around, and Ellie from the events team handled our initial planning. Even during the busy Christmas events period, Ellie stayed communicative, attentive, and genuinely helpful. On the day, Natalie looked after us brilliantly, keeping things running smoothly while being discreet and attentive. The rest of the team were just as good, and all our guests enjoyed the excellent food, which was well prepared and presented. Horwood House Hotel’s cheerful, helpful, professional events team made this milestone celebration memorable for all the right reasons. I’d highly recommend them.

The food and staff are superb, and after upgrading we had a much better room. We love staying in period properties, though the website photo is misleading: there’s a good chance you’ll end up in the soulless 160-bed annex. Corporate-style rooms won’t bother you if you’re teetotal and mainly there for good food. The wine list is overpriced, and charging more than £10 for an after-dinner Irish Coffee must be a world record! One small annoyance: the popular GB News channel isn’t available, which seems strange given it currently has the UK’s highest breakfast television viewing figures.

The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and the spa and swimming pool were especially good. I had a relaxing, amazing weekend here with my fiancé. Lovely hotel, and I’d highly recommend it for a relaxing break.
