Our evening was already lost by the time we found out both lifts were out. One had been out for weeks, and the other couldn't be fixed until Monday. Since I'd told reception I have limited mobility and struggle with stairs, going down meant I wouldn't be able to get back up. We asked about room service and my husband was told to ask at the bar. We stayed in the room instead of going out, which was the whole point of the special weekend he'd booked for us. We had a lovely fifth-floor room beside the lifts and were dressed and ready to leave. At 8 the next morning, with the hotel quiet, I managed the 117 stairs sideways, one step at a time. My husband had to bring down a suitcase and backpack. When we told the receptionist how the night had been ruined, he said, “It is what it is,” and that the lifts would remain out until Monday. He showed no sympathy. Asked how long the other lift had been broken, he said, “weeks.” I said we were disappointed that nobody had offered another solution. He paused, then said we could have used the service lift. We both gasped and told him we hadn't been offered that option, and that it would have saved our evening. When I asked if he would pass the complaint to the manager, he smirked and said he was the manager, that he'd received my complaint, and would write it down with all the others coming in that day. Then he walked away. I've never had such poor customer service. Our complaint was valid, and using the service lift could have resolved the problem if anyone had simply told us about it.

The building is beautiful, especially that stunning staircase, and it's 152 years old. We paid £135 for the stay with breakfast, which felt very reasonable for a central hotel with parking on site. Just note that the advertised £10 parking actually costs £20 for 24 hours, and it's independent of the hotel. We had a lovely stay. Our standard room was snug, but comfortable and very clean, and the bathroom was clean and good too. Tea, coffee and a mini bar were there, though we didn't use them. The location is great, and I'd definitely recommend the hotel.

We had loads of room in the twin, and it was ready early enough for us to check in before 10am. Tea and coffee supplies were provided, along with a well-stocked mini bar and a few nibbles. It's right across from Central station, a great base for exploring the city.

The room let the stay down. It was extremely small, with the bed pushed up against the wall and barely enough space to walk around. There was no bathroom ventilation, and although we were told the windows could be opened with assistance, they were painted shut. The shower was difficult to set without scalding yourself, and its head isn't suitable if you're over 6ft tall. The location is brilliant and convenient. Check-in took a while before anyone saw us, but the service was good once we were attended to.

Breakfast was good, and the water pressure was great, so there were some nice points. The hotel is central to Newcastle, which also meant a bit of noise outside. The room was quite hot, and the only way to control it was opening the window. Parking was first come, first served even though I'd booked a week ahead. I wound up paying at the train station opposite as well as paying the hotel's pre-booking cost.
