We checked out today and still haven’t had the money released back to us. They repeatedly took money from our account without authorisation for the security deposit, and no one could explain why. The duty manager, Irene, wasn’t professional about it and only apologised after I asked for her name and position. When we went down for the third time, Andrew was much nicer and offered us a meal, which we declined, and complimentary breakfast one morning. He was kind, but still couldn’t explain what was happening. I’d also requested a birthday plate and a bottle of Prosecco for my husband before we arrived, but neither was in the room. Irene demanded proof, saying, “I would love to see the proof of this request as this is the first iv heard of it.” Once I showed it, she took a picture on her phone and said sorry. That was an appalling way to speak to a paying customer. This was a city break without our kids, meant for relaxing, and the whole thing put a dampener on time away we won’t get back. For the price, we could have stayed somewhere like the much nicer Dakota. We won’t return and wouldn’t recommend this hotel. Avoid it.

The room was extremely dated and sat right above the generator at the back of the hotel, with constant noise around the clock. They’d left earplugs on the bedside table, so the hotel clearly knows about it, but guests shouldn’t need them just to sleep. Proper soundproofing or not assigning that room would make more sense. An exit door beside the room also slammed each time someone used it, making uninterrupted rest nearly impossible. The bar service was frustrating too. We sat down while the shorter gentleman tending bar chatted with a colleague, and he didn’t acknowledge us or ask about drinks. When we finished, we had to ask repeatedly for another round, even though we were right in front of him. We also had to sign a paper with our name and room number every time we ordered, despite asking to start a tab. Later, when a pizza arrived at my room, the same staff member asked my room number while standing at the clearly numbered door. It all felt unnecessary. The pizza was massively overcooked, with dough almost impossible to eat. Two friends travelling with us repeatedly had trouble with their key cards and had to make several trips to reception. Worse, a staff member entered one of their rooms without knocking while they were inside. That’s completely unacceptable and a serious breach of privacy. The hotel needs serious renovation. Between the poor maintenance, noise, service issues and privacy problem, the stay felt chaotic and badly managed. We won’t be back.

The staff made my sister’s birthday event at The Vermont a lovely occasion. They were helpful from the moment we walked in, through the buffet and bar service, and were excellent throughout. The Gold Room was beautifully arranged and very well appointed. At least one other wedding was happening at the same time, but I can’t recommend the hotel and its staff highly enough.

I love the style here. It has art deco charm and feels like it comes from a golden age, with a concierge still wearing tails, yet it also has modern amenities and great service. The hotel is ultra clean. Breakfast isn’t as extensive as at some places, but the quality is great. The location is a big part of the appeal: a lift takes you out to the Quayside or into town. The rooftop bar, Above, has amazing views, though rain meant we had to sit inside when we visited. Redwood Bar is open 24/7, and you can also visit sister venues including Aveika, a popular club/Japanese restaurant/grill, Livello cocktail bar and Hudson's restaurant. An absolute gem, and my favourite hotel in central Newcastle.

We stayed one night midweek in Dec 2025 and enjoyed it. The room at the front overlooked the reception entrance and car park, but there wasn’t excessive noise. It was warm enough overnight and the hotel was clean and tidy. Staff were all nice and courteous. After walking around Newcastle's streets and Xmas market, we had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Overall, a good stay.
