After six days camping, I spent a night here for a bit of luxury. The room was clean, lovely, dog friendly and excellent value, and the receptionists were really friendly. Breakfast had plenty of options and there was no wait for the cooked food. Dinner was a different story. I booked a table and ordered the chef's excellence chicken supreme, but we waited over an hour. It tasted good, though it wasn't haute cuisine. I'd recommend the hotel for its location, rooms and being dog friendly, but I'd eat out in the evening.

The rooms are amazing, and the hotel itself is totally lovely. We enjoyed the uneven floors on the stairs, which showed the building's age, and liked asking about its history. If you want a hotel with great rooms, check in here. The menu promised pork belly and crispy crackling, but the skin was so hard it would take a hammer to break, and I'll say no more about the pork belly. For around £25, the portion wouldn't even fit on a saucer. The staff's attitude was that they couldn't care less and it wasn't their problem. Such a shame for a nice place.

We stopped at Bar 1597 for lunch. The place was lovely and warm, and the menu offered a huge range of choices. Most of the food was lovely, but one main dish had a piece of plastic in it. Staff handled it well: they refunded us, offered a replacement and a free drink. Still, it wasn't a great experience, and I'm not sure I'd rush back.

We felt very welcome, and the staff were nice. It's a lovely hotel with distinctive decor and some great older features. Breakfast was good too. We'll book again in the future. 👍

My room was on the small side and a little tired, but clean, with a comfy bed and a hot shower. In the evening we had a delicious sandwich in the lobby, and breakfast the next morning was lovely. The receptionist gave me a very warm welcome, though I didn't get her name; she's from Durham. All the staff were lovely. It's a quaint hotel with bags of character.
