The complimentary full English breakfast was tasty, and the fish goujons I ordered were very good too. The pub has a wide choice of beers and the staff are warm and friendly. The room was basic, a bit worn and dated, but had what I needed for one night. There’s no lift, as with many pub hotels. It’s conveniently close to the harbour, where 24-hour parking is reasonably priced. The bar ceiling is low, which I noticed straight away as a tall person. I’d stay again if I’m passing through.

The interior was impressive and spotless, and the toilets were very clean. The menu had a good range, and I chose fish, chips and peas. The fish was enormous, though the chips were rather dry. This meal was cheaper here than at other pubs in town. But the bar staff seemed disinterested. When I asked if a table was free, the person behind the bar stayed focused on the computer and didn’t look at me. Their attitude left me wondering on the way out whether I’d return. Probably not.

Ryan and his team made us feel very welcome. Our bedroom, Room No 1, had a lovely sunrise sea view, and the beds were the most comfortable we’ve slept in at a hotel. It’s just minutes from Penzance Train Station. The room was clean and no-frills, with a good tea and coffee tray and a tasty breakfast. Downstairs there’s a lovely olde world bar with music and sport. We enjoyed our stay very much.

We stopped for lunch and liked the decor inside and the friendly staff. The battered catch of the day was haddock with hand-cut chips, and it was excellent. The Cornish cheese burger was excellent too. Two meals and three drinks came to £64, which wasn’t too bad and made it worth a visit.

There’s a cosy bar with nice drinks, the price is decent, and it’s close to the station. We stayed overnight and loved the evening meal; the breakfast buffet was great too. The only drawback was spending about half the time waiting for more food to be cooked, so allow enough time to enjoy it. Next time we’re in the area, this will be the first place we look at booking.
