The room looked amazing after its recent refurbishment, and the bed was comfortable, as I usually find at Premier Inns. I also had a lovely countryside view and a very quiet room, even though the hotel is right at the end of the motorway. Staff were excellent. My only concern was seeing an upstairs fire door propped open with a doorstop in the morning while all the staff were downstairs.

The food was dire. I left my meal and got a kebab instead. It's not great food either, but at least you know what you're getting, and it was better than what was served here. Breakfast was standard fare, though I had to figure things out myself. The only person around was a stressed microwave jockey. The staff should spend some time at the Old Market Hereford Premier Inn to learn how to deal with people properly. As a place to sleep, this is OK: a standard Premier Inn room and a fine bed. The staff here don't come across as people people, more like they're just here for a wage.

The booking was straightforward, thanks to the helpful woman who recommended the cheapest option for our daughter and her two young children, a double room with a cot. They were staying overnight while visiting my wife and me nearby in Ross on Wye, where we were camping in our motorhome. When we met them at the Premier Inn, the room was lovely and the bed so comfortable that we wished we were staying too. We all ate there, and the food was OK, though basic meals cost £75 for three adults and two infants. Service was slow as well. We waited about half an hour after sitting down before anyone took our order.

A huge thank you to Sam and Belle for looking after us on a stormy Sunday evening. We weren't staying at the hotel, but after a pothole about half a mile away blew our tyre, another motorist gave us a lift there. Sam and Belle made us feel welcome, brought us hot drinks and offered us a table in the restaurant while we tried to arrange a lift back to Abergavenny. Xx
