The building itself is beautiful, which makes its condition such a shame. It’s smelly, tired and dirty after years of neglect and no upkeep. There are stains all over the walls, floors, sockets, bath and even the bedding, which had seemed clean at first. The smell hits you as soon as you walk in and hangs around the hallways and stairwells. My room had a different unpleasant smell, though. The smells made me question whether anything was clean, and looking around confirmed it. I paid for a night, but left two hours after checking in and slept in my car instead. I spent about 20 minutes in the room with the window open, hoping it might air out while I was away. It hadn’t improved when I got back, so I left. This place needs a complete overhaul to make it clean and inviting again. Saying “you get what you pay for” doesn’t seem fair to other budget hotels.

Don’t stay here, even for one night. Spend a little more and go somewhere else. It was absolutely awful, and in all honesty the streets or my car would have been better. The photos look nothing like the place. The rooms are very dated and freezing because the heating doesn’t work. The electric heater for one of the rooms was broken too, so my family had to sleep in their clothes. We waited well over half an hour for anyone to greet us at reception, after ringing the doorbell camera three times. There was barely any parking, and the hotel and staff were awful. A disgusting smell clung to everything, and I’ve washed my clothes more than three times since the stay but it’s still there. Housekeeping used a trolley like one from sainsbury's, which seemed very unprofessional. Take the reviews seriously when they say the place feels unsafe, smells bad, has no heat, is unhygienic with stains everywhere, and has notes from people asking for help. Don’t stay here alone, as a couple, with friends, family, or especially children. This place should be closed down immediately.

The staff were friendly, and check-in worked well. Our room, bedding and towels were crisp white, and the room was very warm with plenty of hot water. We managed to park on the hotel grounds. Some parts of the hotel have long-term tenants, but the people we met were friendly. It’s an old building, though the communal areas were clean. It isn’t posh, and the price reflects that. It won’t suit everyone, but we’d stay again.

The staff made us feel welcome, and there was plenty of tea, coffee and milk in the big, high-ceilinged room. The shower had lovely hot water, with soap and shower gel provided, and everything was super clean. The bed was awful, though, really bumpy. It's a beautiful Gothic Victorian building, but it's dated, with lots of details from its former glory still visible on the ground floor. Parking is limited because there are so many rooms, and the neighbours take up the off-street spaces. I'd definitely stay again. Thanks to the staff.

We paid for one night, but staying would have felt like torture. The room looked nothing like the pictures or description, and after dropping our bags off and going out, we felt increasingly miserable about the thought of coming back. We eventually returned, collected our things and left quietly to book a decent hotel. It was awful and a complete waste of money. The person who showed us to the room was fine and very polite, though. It wasn't his fault.
