The Psalter

We got married at the Psalter last week and had a fantastic day. The wedding breakfast and evening buffet were standouts, with food of the highest quality. Thanks to Iona, Tom, Katie and the whole team. I’d highly recommend the Psalter to anyone planning to get married in Sheffield.

We came for a birthday and anniversary dinner hoping for a special evening, but left deeply disappointed. A couple of the first courses were excellent, then the night went downhill: service was inconsistent, waits were long, and one dish was genuinely inedible. Some plates were barely touched, but nobody made a meaningful effort to deal with that while we were there. It felt chaotic, with staff coming and going like a conveyor belt. Some seemed disengaged and unprofessional, and the attention to detail was poor, from a stained table and crumbs that hadn’t been cleared to noticeably different care at nearby tables. Rock music also gave the room more of a pub feel than the ambience we expected from this kind of restaurant. Afterwards, we sent the owner detailed and balanced feedback. The replies were generic and dismissive, with no real engagement with the points we’d raised. That lack of accountability reinforced the impression from the evening. Our special occasion wasn’t treated as one. We won’t return or recommend the restaurant.

It was my birthday celebration, and the food and service were excellent. The staff made sure nothing felt like too much trouble. I didn’t stay overnight, so can’t comment on the rooms. I’d definitely go again.

The whole evening felt relaxed and nicely paced, with a really pleasant atmosphere. My partner and I had the tasting menu for a birthday meal, and every dish was tasty and well presented without being overdone. A big thank you to the chefs and Katie, the restaurant manager, who was super friendly and looked after us all evening. I’d recommend it if you want somewhere a bit special but still relaxed, and we’d definitely return.
