Britannia Wigan Hotel

We couldn’t really get out and explore because we were travelling by coach, and the hotel is a bit out of the way. The buffet breakfast was very nice, as were the dessert choices, but the evening main course options were very basic. Maybe that reflected the price. We were there for one night on a National Holidays mystery trip weekend. The hotel looks lovely after its recent refurb, and our room was large with a nice bathroom.

The breakfast was the highlight. The chef was so polite and cooked everything perfectly, and I’d come back just for that. We stayed two nights with my two cats, and it was a lovely stay. The woman at reception was really nice and professional. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable, and the shower was amazing.

The sheets had fresh stains and public hairs all over them. Dust was everywhere, even covering the walls, and there were footprints on the wall beside the bed. It made me feel sick. There was no soap in either room, which shocked me in 2025. We were offered another room, but it had the same problems apart from the footprints above the bed. We left straight away in the early hours with my toddler and found another hotel, going to the Premier Inn even though it cost a little more. With our health conditions and poor immune systems, it didn’t feel safe for my toddler or me to stay there. I thought every public building would have at least hand soap after Covid. The receptionist looked shocked when she saw the photos. They told my autistic husband this wasn’t normal there, but I don’t buy it. They know.

There’s no evening meal at the hotel, but Hickory's Smokehouse is just across the road and is nice. Our family room for three had plenty of space. The bathroom was a bit dated but clean, and all the staff were friendly, helpful and polite. I’d stay here again.
