We’d barely sat down for a family meal when the waitress asked for our order. We said we weren’t ready, but she came back within a minute to ask again. A minute later, another waitress told us to hurry up because a party of 20 was due shortly. We ordered, ate and left, but there was no sign of the large group. I don’t know why they were rushing us.

We had dinner here on Friday. It was pretty quiet, so there wasn’t much atmosphere. I had the surf and turf, and my turf was a bit overdone, though the steak was excellent. The burger relish had a strong cinnamon or nutmeg taste, I think, though I can’t remember if it was listed. Standard pub food, and the service was okay. I didn’t stay in the rooms.

We came for Sunday lunch and everyone enjoyed their meal, including the vegetarians and people eating gluten free. It’s a lovely old building inside, with lots of rooms and different levels, though it doesn’t look like much from outside. The high street location in Long Melford is very convenient, and everyone in our group found parking nearby.

We’ll be back. The Sunday lunch was the best we’ve had in the area, with perfectly cooked food, excellent service and portions big enough to leave us full. I had the trio of meats, which was a real challenge to finish, especially with the cauliflower cheese on the side. Unlike the watery, flavourless versions you sometimes get, this had a great texture and taste.

Our group of eight, including three children, had Sunday lunch here. The surroundings were lovely, the portions generous and good value, and both the wine list and children’s menu were excellent. The food was fabulous.
