The breakfast was good, the bar and café menu had plenty of choice, and the staff worked hard and were friendly. Jane deserves a special mention. She was enthusiastic and efficient, brought me a hairdryer, iron and ironing board, took my dinner order, cooked an excellent curry and served it with a smile. I’ve already recommended the hotel to friends coming to London. The room was spacious, and the ensuite had a bath. The location is hard to beat, about five minutes from the station and the charming High Street, and near the riverside locks and houseboats and the deer in Bushy Park. I was impressed by the ambience and thought it was good value, especially as I’d expected much less. I’ve taken off a star because there was no service for six days unless I requested it, Wi-Fi wasn’t free, and there was no hairdryer in the room. Cheers, Val Hull (Sydney Australia.)

I used to stay here now and then when I lived nearby, just for a night. The reception staff were polite, even though they seemed to change constantly. My last room was dusty and smelled strongly of cleaning products and air freshener. My allergy to strong odours made it hard to breathe, so I left the room and asked several times to move. They insisted there was no smell and said I had to stay there, with no refund. The manager Agnes treated customers in an intimidating and unjustified way. After the breathing difficulties and swelling got severe, I was taken to hospital by ambulance. No further comment is needed.

The rooms are very quiet, which is really all I need, and it was great value for money. During our four-night stay, though, there was always some kind of rubbish on the hallway floor. There’s also only one working lift. A frequent guest told me that’s always the case when he visits. Since the lobby is on the first floor, the single lift becomes a problem around check-in and checkout.

The location is fantastic, and the room was clean and fine for the price. It was very small, but adequate. The breakfast was disappointing and, to me, badly mis-sold. The coffee described as fresh was vile, the sausages were all filler, the egg seemed to be made from powder, and the mushrooms weren’t cooked. With such an international mix of guests, it felt cynical and exploitative to charge people for that. It made me ashamed to be British.
