The view from the balcony was beautiful, with the sea and cliffs, dog walkers, and colourful lights running down the street toward the theatre at night. We slept better here than at home. Both rooms we saw had huge super king beds with fresh, comfortable white linen, and there was tea, coffee and even a little jar of hot chocolate. Because of my mobility and all our bags, Ed offered us the larger room, which was thoughtful. When we arrived, he helped my other half with our many bags, offered us a hot drink after the long journey, and showed us to our room. We’d never been welcomed with a drink like that before. Nothing seemed too much trouble during our stay. Each morning we were asked whether we wanted the room serviced, with the bed made, towels refreshed, bins emptied and cups washed. Breakfast was outstanding. There were cereals, yoghurt, fresh fruit, juice and gluten-free options to help ourselves to, followed by tea or fresh coffee and the option of hot food. The mushroom omelette was so good we ordered it again the next day. We also had bacon, poached egg and beans with wholemeal toast, and the egg was perfect. The produce was fresh and locally sourced. We met Ed’s wife, kate, and heard about the challenges they’ve faced. In my view, they give guests a first-class service. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We’ll be back. Keep doing what you’re doing!

Breakfast was phenomenal, with great produce, much of it local as I understand, cooked to perfection. The room had everything we needed, a stunning balcony view, and a great shower with good pressure, a comfortable temperature and plenty of large bath-sheet towels. The bed and pillows were so comfortable they got the seal of approval from my partner, who was 28 weeks pregnant. We appreciated being able to arrange room servicing around us, as we didn’t need it every day. Ed, Kath and the team gave us a warm, hassle-free welcome and got us settled straight away. The location is fantastic, and at night we could hear the waves from this quiet spot. All the facilities were great, the team were lovely, and the breakfasts are phenomenal. You can’t go wrong with The Downs Babbacombe for a break in this beautiful part of the country.

The breakfast was outstanding, better than some we’ve had at much higher-rated hotels. We also loved being able to order practically anything, whether at breakfast or another time, and even have breakfast served on the balcony. Each balcony had a table, chairs and cushions. There was also a little ice cream parlour with outdoor seating, a small bar, and local art in the dining room. Proper table service, with linen, ice buckets and formal settings, came with a very kind, attentive waitress. The staff were well trained and keen to look after us, even changing uniforms to clean the bedrooms. We stayed over the summer half term and loved the incredible view from the room and balcony. On a clear day, with binoculars, you could see all the way to Sidmouth. The nearby cliff train, beach, hotels, gardens, theatre and bars gave the area a Spanish holiday feel. The hotel’s old-fashioned charm, attention to detail and comfortable, thoughtfully arranged bedrooms made it feel like stepping back in time, in a good way. We thought it was excellent value. A real gem, and we wanted to return straight away.

We’ll always remember the view of the sea from our spotless balcony. The food was out of this world, Gordon Ramsey must have been in the kitchen! From the moment we walked in, the staff were friendly and helpful, always going the extra mile. We’ve just had an amazing week at The Downs. Thanks again.

We picked this hotel because it welcomes dogs, and bowls were provided for ours. We really enjoyed our three-night stay, including the delicious cream tea on our last day. The room was clean, with a large, comfortable bed, lovely white linen, tea and coffee facilities, and a small balcony overlooking the sea. From check-in to check-out, everyone made it a lovely experience. We’d definitely recommend the hotel. Thanks for a great stay.
