I left early because the upkeep and safety issues made me uncomfortable. When I told reception the hotel wasn't very good, the reply was just “ok bye”, with no apology or effort to sort anything out. There was no restaurant open and nobody offered another option. The pool was freezing, run down and unpleasant, with condensation dripping from the ceiling and soaking me as I came in. The gym was dated and its changing rooms smelled damp. Walking there, I found the hallways dark again and had to use my phone torch. My room and en-suite felt badly dated, with stained tiles and a tiny shower cubicle. There was rubbish in the hallways, and no hallway lighting. I nearly fell down the stairs after missing a step. The bathroom light fitting wasn't IP-rated despite being in a special location, which seemed a serious safety concern. I don't think the hotel should operate without a valid EICR. The location was good, but that's the only positive I found. I stay away two to three nights a week, and in its current condition this place shouldn't be taking bookings. It isn't fit for purpose, and I wouldn't recommend it without major improvements.

The photos make this look like an amazing hotel, but they seem old and don't show how run down and uncared for the property is inside and out. It's sad, because you can see how beautiful this listed building could be. I read the reviews thinking it couldn't be that bad. It really was grim, and I'd be surprised if it's still operating in a few months. If it's the only place with rooms, take my advice and buy a tent. There was no bar or evening food. The pool, spa and gym weren't operating. From our window, the area around them looked overgrown, with shabby buildings. A couple of rooms could easily be lovely, but they were unused. The receptionist was extremely rude and insulted us and other guests. He didn't think leaving the PC unlocked was a GDPR breach, and said guests often check themselves in. The bedrooms were uncomfortably hot and not especially clean. Ours had damp on the ceiling and around the windows, an unstable bed, a dirty bathroom with mould and broken tiles, and a faulty door lock. I didn't dare check for bed bugs.

I was there for ten minutes, then ran off to find another hotel. The place was freezing, dirty and worn out, with sagging soft furnishings. There was no food, no pool or leisure facilities, and even the toilets were closed. The reception desk wasn't in use. Staff had to go into a grubby, messy office out back to use the PC. I asked to see our allocated rooms because the welcome and first impression were so awful. The only staff around were a scruffy man trying to check me in and another scruffy, rude man with a couple of children. He snapped that check-in was at 4pm. Not even a “good afternoon” or a welcome. The rooms were dated and tired, the linen looked old and creased, and the bathroom had mildew and grimy sealant. Jagged tiles were visible in the room with the corner bath. The whole place needs a health and safety inspection and investigation. The owners shouldn't be trading as a hotel until it's at least habitable. It doesn't meet even a basic standard. Not fit for purpose. Please don't waste your time and money, avoid!

Breakfast in the library was a lovely touch, and it was fresh, cooked to order, though basic. The staff were incredible. The house has amazing historic features and could be just the thing if you're a Jane Austin fan who has dreamed of a country house stay. It's shabby chic, so it may not suit everyone, but it was clean.

The breakfast was alright, which was about the only small plus. We were very disappointed and wouldn't book here in its current state. We chose the hotel for the advertised facilities, but weren't warned the pool area couldn't be used. It was vile and freezing, with no seating. The promised hot tub was empty, out of use and full of rubbish. The walk there went past dirty, derelict rooms crammed with discarded things. The changing rooms were filthy, and the “sauna” was literally a shed. Our bedroom was unacceptable, with mould, a cracked ceiling, dirt everywhere and disgusting windows. The lovely outside completely hides a dirty, old, derelict interior. The whole property had an awful smell and a very strange atmosphere. Staff were nowhere to be found when we wanted help or needed to raise these issues.
