We had a table booked for 12 for a family meal today (8/3/26), and the food was amazing, mostly Sunday roasts. All our meals arrived piping hot just 15 minutes after we ordered, with plenty of vegetables. The staff were excellent about keeping us supplied with drinks and any condiments we needed, even with the restaurant so busy. I’ve eaten here before and have never left disappointed. Can’t praise them enough, and I highly recommend booking a meal here.

When we tried to complain, Kirsty said she was the manager. If that’s the case, I feel sorry for the other customers, and especially for the younger staff. She was rude and obnoxious throughout, constantly humming, then we heard her making snide comments about our table to the woman at reception, who was big build and wore glasses. I didn’t get her name. We won’t be visiting again because of that vile woman.

The Bear Hotel is right in Wantage’s Market Place, and its 500 years of history give it plenty of character. It’s still a welcoming coaching inn for locals and visitors, with a prime spot for exploring the market town. The hotel has 34 en-suite rooms; they’re clean and comfortable, though some feel a bit dated. Front-facing rooms can get some street noise. There’s no parking on site, but a long-stay car park is conveniently just behind the hotel. The food is a big part of the appeal. The menu is small but confident, with fresh, well-prepared dishes. The pigeon and black pudding quail Scotch egg, Thai-style cod and popular Sunday roast stand out. Breakfast is generous and nicely presented, and the bar and café are relaxed places to have a coffee or a pint. Staff are friendly and attentive, adding to the hospitality. It’s a characterful place with modern comforts, rather than a slick boutique hotel. For a classic English market-town stay, it’s hard to beat.

We stayed overnight after having a family lunch for a big birthday. The food and wine were delicious, and the service was brilliant. Our room was clean and comfortable too. Three cheers for The Bear.

We went for lunch as a family, and every dish was amazing, worth every penny, with nothing wrong at all. The staff were amazing too. I’d recommend it 100%.
