The staff were friendly, the bed was really comfortable, and it was great value, so we’d definitely stay again. There’s a Travelodge right across the road, though, and the rivalry between the two places seems intense. I saw a kitchen worker hiss at someone taking the bins out, and the next morning a receptionist was trying to calm down a night worker called Dean. She was telling him to let it go and pointing out that their hotels were being refurbished that year, while the Travelodge hadn’t been updated since 2022. She also said their beds were bigger and more comfortable, every room had blackout curtains, and Premier Plus rooms came with a Nespresso machine, which Travelodge didn’t have. Dean seemed calmer by the time we left. Maybe Lenny Henry will have to step in if this keeps up.

The staff went out of their way to make sure we had enough coffee pods and everything else we needed in the room. There was a small technical problem with the self-service check-in, but someone was there to help. We stayed two nights in a Premier Plus room, which I upgraded to after booking early at a sensible price. The Premier Inn was only a 10-minute drive from the Wolf Run, and we found it a comfortable and convenient place to stay.

I’d probably stay here again, though I’d look over the room before unpacking. I may just have had bad luck with it, but the curtains had what looked like vomit or food on them, there was months’ worth of dust by the bed and on the bathroom light fittings, and I found a large, unpleasant stain on the bed sheet when checking out. It wasn’t on the side I slept on, but I don’t expect to inspect a hotel bed first. I didn’t mention the sheet because I was leaving and nothing could be done for me by then. When I reported the curtains, I wasn’t insisting on another room, just expected someone to wipe them down. I was told they’d be changed after checkout. The bathroom has an all-in-one hair and body wash, but no shampoo, which doesn’t work for me as I only use shampoo on my hair. The location was handy for work, with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby, and a park next door that would be useful for a morning run, though I didn’t go in. I picked this hotel because nearby options had worse reviews. I like the Bar & Block chain, so having one on site was a plus, but I only ate breakfast there and the bar closed at 10pm, so I didn’t get a pint. Breakfast was an overpriced, no-frills buffet that seemed to have been sitting out for a while. The hash browns were dry, the bacon sweaty, and the drinking water was warm. There were a couple of cereals, fruit, yogurt and a couple of pastries, plus coffee from a machine, tea, juice and water. I’d choose a cafe on the road next time. The council car park is just behind the hotel, but you have to walk around the block to reach the entrance at the front. A rear door on a buzzer would help. At check-in both self-service screens were broken and nobody was at reception. I rang the bell a couple of times, then after ten minutes a very nice staff member arrived and apologized, saying the pager was broken. The room itself was basic but fine for what I needed, and it was good to have a proper coffee machine and spring water in the fridge. We were meant to book a breakfast slot in case it got busy.

You can count on a good night’s sleep here, with spacious, clean rooms and friendly staff. Check-in was easy, and the service was straightforward. Premier Inn delivers the reliable standard you expect, so it’s a good choice if you want a stress-free stay.

For £49 over Easter Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, the central location was a bargain. The room was a decent size and fairly clean, with working air conditioning, a comfortable bed and better-than-usual shower pressure. I also skipped the long reception queue by checking in on the touchscreen and setting up my own keys. One of my most satisfying Premier Inn stays in a while.
