Avril looked after us really well and was friendly and helpful. We had no trouble with the water, and I even enjoyed a hot bath in the evening. The house has loads of character and a gorgeous view, with the back garden almost running straight down to the coast. Everything was clean and hygienic. I don’t get the complaints that it isn’t modern enough. If modern is what you want, you can pay £150 a night in the smelly centre of Glasgow and look at a wall or pissing bums. We’d probably come back one day, and if we don’t, I’ll happily recommend it to friends.

I booked a night at the Carlton Seamill at the last minute a couple of weeks ago, and it turned out to be one of my best decisions. The breakfasts were amazing, and my bed was really comfortable. From my bedroom I had a breathtaking view across to Arran, and I loved how original the house has been kept. Avril was welcoming and happy to help with anything. We spent ages chatting about all sorts of things. This Guest House has won several high profile awards for its accommodation, and it’s easy to see why. A real gem. I’d have no hesitation recommending it for a night or a few. Good luck with the fight against the Scottish Government’s proposed legislation. I’ll be back for another visit soon, this time with my wife.

Avril was very accommodating. When there was a cancellation, she offered us the main bedroom for our first night, and she served us breakfast despite us being vegan. The views were lovely too, with tables and chairs outside to enjoy them. The house is old, quaint and cosy, but it needs some upkeep. The bathroom faucet wasn’t working during our stay, and on our second night in the Drummond room we found what looked like animal feces on the floor by the bed, possibly from a cat or dog. The host didn’t have a clear explanation, and the room smelled as well. It’s a cute b&b, but the smell and mess need sorting, along with some renovations, before I’d give it five stars.

Carlton has been Avril's family home for over 70 years, and it’s full of family history. As a 'vintage' lover, I found it an absolute delight. Avril looked after us wonderfully and the place felt like home from the moment we arrived until we left. Our bedroom looked out across the sea to Arran, a view that must be one of the best in Scotland, and the beach is just seconds away. There’s plenty of parking, and a wonderful full scottish breakfast is available. Such a lovely change from a sterile, anonymous hotel. Highly recommended. Date of stay: September 2022 Tip: Chat with Avril, she has lots of interesting stories.
