For £150 a night for an economy room, this felt below par, and I can't recommend the place. The walls are paper thin, so you hear everything, and the doors have big gaps underneath. I even wondered whether they were fire doors. When we were there, the room water kept changing from hot to cold. Our friends in other rooms had the same problem. Breakfast was okay, but there was no black pudding on either of the two days. Dinner service was a mess because there weren't enough staff. We had nearly 30 people booked, but one waitress was left to serve the whole restaurant. Some meals were missing items, and other people had finished eating before the remaining dishes arrived. She did her best, so this isn't a criticism of her. Management needs to sort it out.

The pub was such a cosy, clean delight, with a lovely atmosphere, especially with all the local people there. The man who served us was friendly, too. We stopped in at the end of a walk during our first trip to Yorkshire, and the food was absolutely delicious and piping hot. Yorkshire, its pubs, and its people were a real pleasure. We'll definitely return.

I had to cancel my August room booking and did so two months ahead. They told me they'd handle it, but later charged me anyway. When I called, they said there was no record of my cancellation. How convenient. It makes me think this place only cares about money. Strongly don't recommend it.

The staff were very nice, and this is handy if you're going to a wedding at nearby Danby Castle. I can recommend it, as long as you keep in mind that it's mainly a pub with rooms, with the hotel side coming second. The cooked breakfast was excellent, but the rest was basic, and fruit was provided on only two of our four mornings. There are house rules, including a minimum £100 charge for breakages. One night we got back at 10.35 to find the place almost completely dark and had a hard time getting let in.

We needed somewhere to stay for a wedding near Danby Castle, and this little place was perfect. The staff were brilliant and did all they could to make us feel welcome and at ease. We'd love to come back and would recommend it for an event or a weekend away.
