The George Inn

The steak was tender, juicy and delicious, with great chips alongside it. We’d only popped into the George Inn for a quick drink with friends visiting from Liverpool, but the tempting smell from the kitchen convinced us to stay for dinner. There’s a fantastic range of drinks, including delicious craft beers from the Windsor and Eton brewery. The woman behind the bar let me try samples when I couldn’t decide on a beer, and the friendly staff made the whole visit brilliant. Great for a quick drink or a longer afternoon or evening with food.

Those pig cheeks were rich, hearty and out of this world, just right for this time of year. My partner had the steak pie and loved it too, which is saying something because she’s extremely picky 🙃. We came last weekend and felt welcome from the start. The lager tasted great as well. Bravo, we’ll be back and recommending it.

The location is excellent, less than a five-minute walk from Windsor castle. The room was superficially clean, the bed fairly comfortable, the TV worked and the shower pressure was good. But the rest of the stay was pretty poor, especially for the price. It definitely wasn’t worth what we paid. The room was run down, with broken light bulbs, peeling paint and mould in the bathroom. It was very cold, though we could turn up the radiator. The window was drafty, which didn’t help with the noise. We could hear staff outside repeatedly telling people it was their last drink, and it went on for hours. The sound seemed more like a nightclub than the usual pub noise we’ve experienced before. It wasn’t noise from the pub below our room, either. Check-in was an unpleasant start. Three staff members discussed among themselves who had to check us in and seemed annoyed about it. They weren’t friendly or welcoming. Their computer system wasn’t working, which wasn’t anyone’s fault, but after a long journey it was unpleasant to stand there for so long. They couldn’t find our room because of the system issue, so they put us in an empty one, which may have been the worst room.

The Manager suggested I try the Braised Pork Cheeks on my return visit, and they were just as delicious as the Fish & Chips I’d had before. The service was impeccable. A wonderful experience, highly recommend!
