I parked overnight at the hospital car park, about a five-minute walk away, and it was reasonably priced. The little hotel is well placed for York’s attractions, and my room was clean and comfortable. The shower had good pressure and there were plenty of small toiletries. The woman who welcomed me was friendly and polite, and very patient when I couldn’t work out the key cards. It could use some updating. There were patched spots on the walls, the bathroom shelf was loose and slanted so I couldn’t put anything on it, and there was no sink plug. On the plus side, there was lots of tea and coffee, a fan, a heater, a mini fridge (a first for me in a hotel) and free bottled water.

Great value for a night, with comfortable beds and a brilliant en-suite. There were a couple of small issues in our room: the extension lead by the door didn’t work, and we had to switch the kettle off ourselves when it boiled. York was busy that day, so we didn’t get the chance to mention it to staff. We’d definitely stay again when we’re next in York.

Don’t stay here. It’s overpriced and has no facilities, and parking isn’t free. The staircase would challenge a mountain climber. Room 6 is tiny, with no table, chairs or wardrobe. Clothes hang above the tea-making setup, right over the kettle. The shower room is dirty and rusty, the lights don’t work, and silicone seems to be holding it together. Central heating is tepid and the room heater makes a racket. The paintwork is covered in daubs, like it was done by someone with a visual impairment. The welcome pack’s useful information includes warnings about being thrown out and fined for having alcohol.

It wasn’t that bad for one night, though the room was tiny and the shower was awful. We only needed somewhere to sleep, and for what we paid we weren’t expecting five-star accommodation. It’s well placed, just a mile from the centre, and we easily walked into the middle of York and back. Fine for a short stay, but I’d choose somewhere else for more than one night.

The bed was uncomfortable because the mattress sagged, and the room was cold with the radiator off. A small electric heater was provided, but it didn’t warm the room enough. No one was at reception, and it took an hour to get a call back. Fixing these things would make a big difference to the comfort of a stay.
